A number of Scottish energy companies have strengthened their links with Brazil thanks to a recent trade mission organised by energy and engineering umbrella organisation, North Scotland Industries Group (NSIG). NSIG organised the mission in conjunction with Scottish Development Institute (SDI) to identify opportunities in Brazil for those members interested in developing their business in the country. The group included three NSIG member companies, Orion Group, Opus Plus and Mowat Technical and Design Services (MTDS).

The delegation visited Wood Group and Aker Solutions to gain an insight into operations and attended presentations from taxation experts, Brazilian oil major, Petrobras and oil and natural gas company, OGX. The group also attended a variety of networking events organised by SDI and UK Trade & Investment (UKTI). NSIG also had positive discussions with the National Organisation of the Brazilian Petroleum Industry (ONIP), which expressed an interest in finding Scottish businesses that are keen to work with Brazilian companies.

NSIG is looking to strengthen its global connections further in the future, with a possible oil and gas trade mission to The Faroë Islands and a renewable energy mission to Denmark, following a successful visit to Danish oil supply chain companies in March. As part of its international support for members, NSIG will be attending exhibitions and events in the USA in May and Norway later this year.

NSIG chief executive, Ian Couper said: “The trade mission to Brazil was successful for both our members and NSIG. From our perspective I was delighted that we had positive discussions with ONIP and gained valuable contacts for the future. A number of companies could benefit from operating in the country, particularly if they have innovative technology or new and advantageous services or products. The Brazilian market, though huge just now, is expected to grow faster over the coming years. I would strongly urge members to consider the potential Brazil has to offer, and I will be seeking to have meetings with members that I believe will benefit from involvement in this market. As a result of the excellent feedback from the companies on the trade mission, I am looking at the possibility of returning early next year to build on the relationships created during my visit.”

With more than 110 members from across the North of Scotland and the islands, Invergordon-based NSIG seeks to assist local businesses by exploiting opportunities, raising the profile of local companies, enhancing business prospects and addressing issues that may be of concern for local businesses.
