ShipBuilding Industry Vol.7 No.2

In our June/July 2013 issue of SBI we go on board three new builds demonstrating the quality of Western European shipbuilding. SBI Senior Editor John Gauldie had an exclusive tour of the Artemis – Van Oord’s Jumbo CSD built by the Netherlands’ IHC Merwede. He also visited the LaNaval Shipyard in Bilbao, Spain, before giant rock dumper Joseph Plateau left for her first deployment in Australia. And our cover story, the Seven Viking, demonstrates the finest in Norwegian shipbuilding from Ulstein. On long-term charter for Statoil, she is co-owned by Eidesvik Offshore and Subsea 7.

In June Norway will host Nor-Shipping 2013. Ahead of the show, SBI Senior Editor Courtney Fray travelled to Bergen – the ‘World’s Chemical Tanker Capital’ – to hear what local exhibitors had to offer. We also profile up and coming global yards exhibiting at Nor-Shipping, including Grandweld Shipyards in Dubai. They are delivering the first of a series of seismic chase vessels for Bourbon. We also took a close look at Bangladeshi yard Western Marine’s European exports.

Finally, we enjoyed a tour of the Veth Propulsion facilities in the Netherlands. Recent offshore references are reshaping the company’s market, with interest from as far afield as Australia. Meanwhile, Fender Innovations is a new company quickly making a name for its – you guessed it – fender innovations on tenders, transfer vessels and rescue craft.
