igus Offshore Cable Chains First to Gain DNV GL Classification
Last month, German cable fabricator igus announced that classification society DNV GL has approved its range of chainflex cables for moving applications on ships and offshore applications. This is the first and only cabled classification for energy chains in the offshore sector.

igus announced that its range of chainflex cables have been approved for dynamically moving applications on ships and offshore applications by the DNV GL classification society. The classification is significant because it represents the first and only cabled classification for energy chains in the offshore sector, the company says.
Both igus and DNV GL undertook pioneering work to reach this stage of classification, specifically testing the cables for continuous motion. Within this framework, igus contributed experience of its own unique chainflex test programme.
Until now, there have been no standards or approval procedures for moving e-chain cables. The criteria have been the same as for fixed cables and as such have been far from sufficient for continuously moving e-chain applications. With this latest DNV GL certification, igus has extended its lead as the manufacturer of e-chain cables with the most approvals and certificates.
Subsea Drilling Cable Chain
Guided, dynamic cables often fail due to constantly increasing loads and harsh working conditions. In extreme cases, failures caused by cable ‘corkscrews’ and core ruptures can bring the whole production process to a standstill.
igus’ chainflex cables are specifically developed for heavy-duty offshore applications, to guide cables for undersea drilling. Designed for drilling ships, oil platforms, ports and ships, the relatively open system can be used above and below the water’s surface.
A flexible, rugged chain body protects the cables and hoses against mechanical impact, as well as external damage. The design deliberately avoids an open, pin-hole connection to prevent dirt accumulation.
