Stronger Maritime Ropes with Lankhorst Ropes at SMM 2014

Lankhorst Tipto WinchlineInnovations in stronger and safer maritime ropes, together with through-life rope support, are the themes of Lankhorst Ropes’ booth at this year’s SMM show in Hamburg on the 9 – 12 September, in Hall A1, booth 510.

In addition to the latest developments in high strength LankoForce ropes, the company is announcing the Lankhorst Technology and Service package offering operators through-life rope support. Also featured on the Lankhorst booth will be the award winning A3 splice and Tipto Winchline ropes.

LankoForce sets new HMPE rope benchmark

Made from DSM’s Dyneema SK78 high modulus polyethylene (HMPE) fibers, LankoForce sets a new benchmark for HMPE rope performance in mooring, towing, salvage and lifting. In addition to a higher strength retention factor, the fibers are better suited to the small, repetitive shock loads encountered during towing. Creep is significantly reduced with the latest LankoForce rope, as a result it shows less structural elongation under static loads during long-term moorings.

Lankhorst Through-Life Rope Support

Lankhorst ropes are designed to provide best practice solutions for mooring, towing, salvage and lifting. All ropes are supplied with Lankhorst guidelines on their application, inspection and retirement criteria. In keeping with Lankhorst’s commitment to building long term customer relationships, it is offering a full ‘through-life’ service package for rope installation and repairs.

“Synthetic ropes are amongst the most critical elements of maritime operations. And so their handling and inspection are very important,” says Hans Pieter Baaij, commercial director, Lankhorst Ropes. “Managing ropes can be time consuming, however, and so we’ve introduced the Lankhorst Technology and Service package for through-life rope support, enabling operators to focus on what they know best – meeting customer needs.”

Award Winning Rope Innovations

Lankhorst Ropes’ Tipto Winchline and A3 splice have each received Seatrade ‘Innovation in Ship Operations’ awards in 2013 and 2012 respectively. The award is given for a new development that has the potential to significantly improve the efficiency of ship operations.

Tipto Winchline – safer moorings

Tipto Winchline reduces the threat to crew from mooring rope snap back. Using its expertise in yarn production and rope construction, Lankhorst Ropes has developed the Tipto Winchline to provide a safer mooring rope.

Based on Lankhorst’s Tipto yarn, the seven strand rope features a Tipto overbraided jacket to protect the rope from wear and tear during handling. Importantly, the jacket fulfills a vital safety function. If the rope breaks due to excessive load, the braided cover acts as a net, capturing the two parted ends. The jacket absorbs the generated energy from the broken rope, and thus reduces the effects of snap back.

A3 Splice – easier rope handling

The A3 splice sets the standard for ease of rope handling and splice strength. With the trend towards fewer crew, the A3 splice is lighter, stronger and smaller than traditional splices. It has 100 percent efficiency, which means there is no loss in rope strength due to splicing. The A3 splice also makes rope handling easier during mooring and towing operations; there is no doubling of the rope or splice stiffness in the mainline commonly experienced with traditional rope splicing.
