Lankhorst Tipto Winchlines for Norwegian Cruise Liners

Norwegian Getaway kopieMaritime ropes producer and supplier, Lankhorst Ropes has supplied mooring lines to Norwegian Cruise Lines’ (NCL) newest vessel the Norwegian Getaway. The cruise ship uses Tipto Winchline and Euroflex ropes which, once retired, will be recycled as part of Lankhorst’s environmentally friendly approach to rope supply.

Norwegian Getaway is NCL’s second Breakaway Class vessel with the first, Norwegian Breakaway, operating from New York and utilising Lankhorst’s Tipto Winchline and Tipto Eight ropes. The Breakaway and Getaway, respectively the 8th and 9th largest cruise ships in the world, were both constructed at German shipyard Meyer Werft.

Lankhorst’s Tipto Winchline features two award winning innovations, the A3 splice and anti-snapback braided jacket. The A3 splice makes ropes easier to handle as there is no doubling of the rope at the splice and has 100 percent efficiency meaning there is no loss of strength as a result of splicing the rope. The non-loadbearing braided jacket of the Tipto Winchline brings several benefits including protecting the rope and minimising the chance of snapback, increasing the safety of the vessel’s passengers and crew.

“The mooring ropes on Norwegian Breakaway were have performed well, making Lankhorst an obvious choice when it came to Getaway” says Capt. Harvard Ramsoy, nautical superintendent, of Norwegian Cruise Line. “Lankhorst also share our environmental values; the ability to recycle the retired ropes is consistent with our commitment to eco-smart cruising.”

Tipto Winchline and Euroflex Ropes

The floating Tipto Winchline features a load-bearing seven strand core giving the rope high strength and relatively low elongation, while both the Tipto Eight and Euroflex are eight strand plaited ropes with low or no water absorption and excellent abrasion resistance. Lankhorst ropes are ideal for mooring due to their high thousand cycles load level (TCLL) values, high strength to diameter ratios and ease of handling. These attributes ensure Tipto Winchline, and Lankhorst’s mooring rope range, provides outstanding mooring performance over a long service life.

Rope Recycling

Lankhorst Ropes is leading the movement for a greener maritime industry by offering customers the ability to recycled used ropes. When a rope is returned to Lankhorst at the end of its lifetime, the rope is identified using its unique number and a certificate of recycling issued. In the recycling process the rope is first shredded, then washed and the resulting material used to form moulded products.
