Cost-effective Vessel Conversion Using Standardised Modules

Modular-conversion-transforms-a-PSV-into-a-multifunctional-vesselHigh costs for converting existing vessels can effectively put an end to updating a fleet. Using predefined modules, a vessel can be mobilised for other types of work within a few days without any interference in its structure. When the mission is completed, the module can easily be demounted. Ulstein initially developed predefined modules for their own ship designs PX121 and PX105, but they can also develop conversion modules for other types of ships and also for external ship designs. Conversions can be carried out at any shipyard.

Mobilisation can occur within just a few days by installing pre-manufactured modules on the ship, meaning that the vessel can quickly re-enter service. Within a short period of time, for example, a platform supply vessel can reappear as an offshore wind service /accommodation vessel, a subsea construction vessel or a vessel for ROV services. The modules can be adapted to the customer’s specific wishes and requirements.

The short and effective conversion reduces both the time spent at the shipyard, and downtime for the vessel. Foundations for installations such as a gangway or crane are implemented in the module. Modules can also contain ROV facilities below the mezzanine deck. On mobilisation, no extensive structural changes need to be carried out, and the modules and the mezzanine deck can easily be demounted when the mission is completed. This way, the vessel can easily be converted for another mission, or revert to a platform vessel if that need should arise. Ship owners with several ships of the same design in their fleet, can re-use the modules on their other vessels with only minor adjustments necessary.
