SMS Namibia Thriving at Walvis Bay

smsnamibie_webThe recent opening of Stone Marine Services (SMS Namibia) new facility at Walvis Bay in Namibia has dramatically improved the heavy engineering facilities in the area and is already proving very successful.

Stone Marine is only a 5 minute drive from Walvis Bay Port with its floating docks and Syncrolift; the floating dock can handle vessels up to 150 m in length while the Syncrolift lifts vessels up to 2000t displacement with an 80m overall length. In its new 5000m2 workshop the company provides a full range of repair and refit services, to customers which includes propellers, thrusters, control systems, steering gear and rudders, and deck machinery. Spares procurement and logistics, NDT inspections, blade repairs and stern seals, also feature in a very complete list of abilities.

The workshop is equipped, with the largest centre lathe in Namibia, a Crawford Swift 11m model, supported by 5m and 2m heavy duty centre lathes, a horizontal borer with 8 ton table load capacity, other facing and horizontal borers, a universal milling machine and various other items of equipment which, added together, amount to one of the best equipped workshops in Africa. Movement of items around the workshop is facilitated by two overhead cranes, one a 12t SWL crane and the other 10t model.
