Zero Tolerance – The IMarEST Lord Kelvin Lecture

imarestDespite the fact that maritime operations have become safer and cleaner, the maritime industry still faces pressures to improve its performance, as well as offering very efficient and effective transportation. Marine scientists and engineers face a challenge as a result of the ‘zero tolerance’ to maritime accidents and pollution incidents demanded by society.

Delivering the Institute of Marine Engineering, Science and Technology (IMarEST) Second Lord Kelvin Lecture on Thursday 10 December, Vaughan Pomeroy, Technical Director, Marine Business, Lloyd’s Register will reflect on his experience gained from nearly thirty years with the organization, where he has taken a keen interest in the lessons that can be learned from accidents and incidents, to produce an insight into these challenges.

“To meet the demands for specialized capabilities, efficiency and the increasing challenge of reducing pollution it is almost inevitable that engineering systems have become more complex and sophisticated,” Vaughan Pomeroy explains. “The challenge now lies in making sure that engineering systems are reliable in use and capable of operation by the crew of average competence. This demands a fresh look at issues such as redundancy, integrity, usability and quality.

“The challenge can only be met by a well educated and experienced maritime community. It will need the combination of marine engineers and scientists working together, to understand the competitive tensions between different demands and to find sustainable solutions. The oceans will form an essential element of man’s future. Maritime operations will be an important contributor to humankind. The challenge is to make this all happen without loss of life and environmental damage.”

The Lecture will be held at IMarEST headquarters at 80 Coleman Street, London EC2R 5BJ in the heart of the City of London. Tea will be served before the lecture at 17.00hrs on 10 December. The Kelvin Lecture will start at 17.30hrs and a Festive Reception will be held immediately after the lecture at 18.45hrs. Attendance at the IMarEST Lord Kelvin Lecture is free to all members of the Institute and press; a registration charge of GBP 15 (incl. VAT) is made to all non-members.
