Castrol Academy Recognised By Rina

castrol_web1Castrol Academy, Castrol Marine‘s new assessment tool comprising eleven technical training modules to help marine engineers and crews develop a range of skills and improve knowledge levels, has been recognised by the Royal Institution of Naval Architects (RINA). RINA’s endorsement follows the appointment by Castrol Marine of Maersk Training as a global non-exclusive distributor of the new assessment tool.

“The Royal Institution of Naval Architects recognises the valuable contribution which Castrol Academy is making to raise the professional standards of engineers in the maritime industry”, said RINA Chief Executive Trevor Blakeley. The tie-up with Maersk Training allows Castrol Academy training resources, which include printed course material and DVDs, to be distributed by Maersk Training and promoted through the leading ship-owners global infrastructure.

Industry-Wide Problem
Castrol Academy was developed in direct response to an industry-wide problem highlighted in a survey by the Institution of Engineering and Technology which revealed that 55% of respondents reported problems recruiting experienced, well-trained technical ship crews. Jonathan Hutchinson, Global Marine Marketing Manager for Castrol Marine, said: “A shortage of well-trained technical people willing to go to sea is pushing up operating costs and increasing the risk of machinery downtime. Castrol Academy was developed to help address crew capability gaps which in turn will result in improved operating efficiencies.”

Excited
Academy training encompasses key areas of the marine industry ensuring greater crew capability and combines traditional print-based modules with interactive DVDs and online assessment. “We are very excited to work with Maersk Training which is leading the industry in marine training programmes”, said Mr Hutchinson. “This latest recognition from RINA demonstrates that leading industry associations are also behind this initiative.”
