Alewijnse Crew Celebrate Naming of Atlantic London in Indonesia

At the ASL Shipyard on Batam Island, the Alewijnse Marine Rotterdam (AMR) and Alewijnse Marine Galatz (AMG) crew (see photo below) celebrated the naming ceremony of the Atlantic London – a jack-up drill rig converted to a hotel rig. “Multiple nationalities, several levels of expertise, one family,” enthuses Alewijnse Business Development Manager Mark Paasman. “Alewijnse, Empowering your business.” The Atlantic London, accommodating 322 personnel, will head for Total E&P’s Yadana gas field in Myanmar.

Singapore’s Ezion awarded the contracts for hotel rig conversions to two yards at opposite ends of the world. At Damen Shiprepair Vlissingen in the Netherlands, the 1982-built drilling rig Transocean Shelf Explorer became the Atlantic Amsterdam; meanwhile at the ASL yard in Batam Island, Indonesia, the 1984-built Transocean Nordic became the Atlantic London. Ezion contracted US-based outfitters Nordica Offshore for the two recent accommodation platform conversion projects. Nordica Offshore brought on board Alewijnse Marine Rotterdam for the electrical engineering and installation.

In its role in the conversions, Alewijnse worked from top to bottom of both rigs – from the cellar deck to the radio antenna deck. A team of 25 from Alewijnse’s Dutch and Romanian business units worked in Vlissingen while 20 headed to Batam Island, supported by the engineering crew at the Alewijnse Marine Rotterdam office.

Beneath the surface, Alewijnse tested, upgraded or installed the necessary electrical components on board the rigs: including installation of new deck lighting, emergency and demarcation lighting, boilers, transformers, sewage systems, generators, stabiliser pumps, RO units, power switchboards, and new distribution systems with engineering of load balance. Alewijnse delivered the new alarm systems – including ESD and CO2 fire extinguisher alarm and control systems – with UPS’s, jacking control and monitoring desk, all PLC-controlled with touchscreens including software. Additional deliveres for the Atlantic London include gangway lighting, installation of cables and trays for the temporary control room for Total E&P’s WP1 rig, which is connected to the accommodation rig.
