Offshore Industry Vol.6 No.3

Pick up the latest issue of OSI at RenewableUK’s Offshore Wind 2013 in Manchester – the UK’s premier offshore wind energy event – from 12-13 June. More on that in a moment, but our cover story jumps to the other side of the offshore world – Brazil’s pre-salt fields and Petrobras‘ shipbuilding challenges. In March OSI’s Dennis Vinkoert flew to Brazil to chart the opportunities and challenges, while OSI’s John Gauldie joined Petrobras senior executives at OTC in Houston. When it comes to the European supply chain, Huisman has the full package as illustrated in our full report on recent delivery of drillship Noble Globetrotter II. Another interesting project, Dockwise installed a 30,000t topside offshore Myanmar. The float-over made use of Allpacks hydraulic power units. “A first for us,” CEO Eric Buitendijk told us during an interview at OTC. “The reliablity of the power packs during these manoeuvres was critical.” For this issue, OSI’s John Gauldie also spoke with four top managers in the heavy lift transport sector at OTC – Michael Kahn, CEO at Jumbo; Offshore Director Charles Nicolson from SAL Heavy Lift; BigLift Shipping‘s CEO Arne Hubregtse and Rolldock‘s CEO Wout van der Zwan.

One of the most interesting areas in the offshore industry covering both wind and oil & gas is seabed preparation and protection. We examine oil & gas developments from Innovative InputJan De NulBoskalis Offshore and FoundOcean, and some recent wind projects lead by Marske Site Services and Ecosse Subsea Systems.

As well as a preview of Offshore Wind 2013 and an overview of Vattenfall‘s DanTysk, we examine some of the wind industry’s developing trends – “There’s been a marked increase in the interest in concrete foundations,” noted Technical Director Ed Dudson from the joint venture between Ramboll, BMT Nigel Gee and Freyssinet (GBF). We examine their proposed, patented Transport & Installation Barge. Finally, Falck Safety Services (formerly Falck Nutec) detail their new safety training centre and training programme in the Netherlands.
