Ampelmann Walk-to-Work Systems with Abuco Specialist Welding
Over the past few years, Dutch specialist welders from Abuco have produced components for the Ampelmann A-type Walk-to- Work (W2W) systems. Using the system’s self-stabilising hexapod with six hydraulic cylinders, offshore personnel can transfer from a vessel or barge to fixed or floating structures.
The relationship between Abuco and the Delft-based Ampelmann can be described as nothing less than extremely close. Earlier this year the two companies signed a framework contract, under which Abuco will fabricate all the necessary parts for several new W2W systems (including main steel work and the telescopic gangway). Abuco also produced parts for a larger version – the E-type (pictured) – which underwent extensive testing last summer offshore and will be used by several O&G operators in the North Sea.
At the end of last year, the Ampelmann system achieved the milestone of 200,000 safe transfers, rising to a total of more than 320,000 registered safe transfers at the time of writing.
