Huisman AHC Up to 900 t SWL

Norway’s Vard shipyard has ordered the first of Huisman’s new 900t subsea cranes with AHC for DOF Subsea’s new build 161m offshore subsea construction vessel. Huisman will supply a second AHC crane, with 600t capacity (pictured), for Subsea 7’s new 160m DP3 heavy construction and flexible pipelay vessel to be built by Hyundai Heavy Industries.

Both cranes are part of a new series of offshore cranes that Huisman developed to meet the increasing demands of the construction and subsea market. The new series is based on Huisman’s 200/400t Offshore Mast Crane, of which the company has so far sold fifteen units. Among the new features, Huisman developed an anti-twist device to mitigate the risk of the twisting of lower block and wire rope (‘cabling’) during subsea lifts in double fall configuration.

Sales Manager Gerben Roks: “Our intensive research and the operational feedback from our clients have convinced us not to use single fall for these cranes. Besides the obvious handling problems with very large diameter wire ropes, the short life span results in tremendous operational expenditures for the operator.”
