A bridge quite far

Van der Vlist were recently asked to co-ordinate the shipment of a large piece for a drilling rig, from the Netherlands across to China.

The access bridge, weighing approximately 90t, had to be taken from the producers quay out to Shanghai. The 35,5m long, 7m wide and 9m high part could not go by road because of it’s enormous dimensions, and therefore had to be barged across to Antwerp port for transhipment to the far east.

Two mobile cranes were hired on the quay to load a special barge which could take the cargo, the shipment to Antwerp wasn’t able to take the most direct route due to the size of the access bridge so a detour on wider waterways was necessary.

Upon it’s safe arrival at the seaport, the unit was lifted from the barge by the ship’s 2 cranes, for a safe shipment around the world to Shanghai. Extra smaller pieces from the bridge were also shipped in containers from Rotterdam to join the bridge, which was a much simpler transport.
