First Skoonbox Revealed at World Port Days

On 7 September, the opening day of the World Port Days, the first Skoonbox was revealed by Wim van Sluis, Chairman of Maritime by Holland, the Dutch maritime network organisation. This marks an important step in the realisation of a battery network for mobile and temporary applications.

Mr Van Sluis revealed the 20-foot container together with Daan Geldermans, the co-founder and technical director of Skoon Energy. Several companies involved in the development of the Skoonbox were present to witness the first public appearance of the green coloured battery.

Development of the Skoonbox continues, as more potential customers are involved in the design process. This is done to guarantee an all-round energy storage unit. In a few months, the Skoonbox will be operational and ready for use.

Among the first users will be the MS. Borelli, an inland vessel measuring 110m long. Allowing the vessel to sail completely emission free. An important next step in making the shipping industry more sustainable and accelerating the energy transition within the sector.

At the same time, Skoon will focus on increasing the number of available Skoonboxes to ensure a solid operational battery network. Introducing the first in this series at the World Port Days, could not be more fitting, as this year’s theme is ‘Energize’. The organisers want to draw attention to Rotterdam’s big sustainability ambitions, and its efforts to become the world’s cleanest port.
