Transfluid Lands in Japan

TransfluidAt the Japan International Boat Show 2018, recently held in Yokohama from 8 March to 11 March, Yanmar Marine displayed their new diesel engine assembled with Transfluid’s hybrid system. This is the final act after two years of tests and sea trials; one year on the test bench at the Yanmar factory, and one year on board Yanmar EX38, a single screw sport-fishing cruiser at Yanmar shipyard.

The new engine is the 6LY440, that is a six cylinders in line with 5.8lt displacement, rated at 324kW at 3,300rpm. Transfluid’s system is the HM2000-40, equipped with 40kW permanent magnet electric machine, with 2:1 ratio marine gear and LiFePO4 battery with 19.2kWh energy at 96Vdc. During sea trials, in the South of Japan Sea, all expectations and performances have been achieved by the perfect combination of the two technologies put to work by Yanmar and Transfluid. This package is ready to go for pleasure and commercial boats, and Yanmar, beside domestic market, is initially also targeting the Pacific Ocean area, including the West Coast of USA. The hybrid system is parallel technology based and this is the way Yanmar decided to go, to grant redundancy on boats especially in difficult deep sea ares such as waters around Japan and Pacific. The complete range of HM family, the hybrid transmission by Transfluid and Transfluid’s batteries have the DNV-GL type approval certification, therefore perfectly fit any work boat application around the world.

The cooperation between Yanmar and Transfluid makes Yanmar the first engine manufacturer to propose the package for the future of boating. The hybrid works with several different modes, such as electric, diesel, booster (electric + diesel), battery recharge. Transition from electric to diesel and from diesel to electric is made automatically at any boat speed and all commands related to hybrid and diesel are well integrated in the Transfluid’s control lever. The hybrid and electric technology is now ready to equip any kind of boat and vessel; the time for development, investigation, expensive research is over. Eventually marine business can easily enter the eco-friendly mobility that the automotive world already started years ago.
